White And Nerdy

I have to thank my old roommate Tracy for this… she apparently thinks of me whenever she hears this song. haha Great.

The RIAA/MPAA should take a note here… I never heard of this song until Tracy told me to go find it on YouTube… and I just purchased the whole album via iTunes Music Store because of it. I would have never gone to the store to buy it, but one-click purchasing of the album makes it easy. Now if you could just do this with DVDs, I would buy/watch more. And I guarantee I don’t have a unique viewpoint.

Update

Hahahaha… speaking of which, I’ve been listening to the album and just heard “Don’t Download This Song”, which you can download for free over here.

Lyrics

Once in a while
Maybe you will feel the urge.
To break into national copyright law
By downloading mp3s
From file sharing sites
Like morphous or grogster or limewire or kazza.
But deep in your Heart.
You know the guilt would drive you mad
And the shame would leave a permanent scar
Cause you start out stealing songs
Then you’re robbing liquor stores
And selling Crack
And running over school kids with your car

[Chorus]
So Don’t Download This Song
The record store is where you belong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh Don’t Download This Song

Oh you don’t want to mess
With the R I Double A
They’ll sue you if you burn that Cdr.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a grandma
Or a seven year old girl
They’ll treat you like the evil Hard-bitten criminal scum you are

[Chorus]
So Don’t Download This Song (don’t go)
Pirating music all day long
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh Don’t Download This Song

Don’t take away money
From artists just like me
How else can I afford another solid gold Hum V
And diamond studded swimming pools
These things don’t grow on trees
So all I ask is everybody Pleaseeeeee

[Chorus]
Don’t Download This Song (Don’t do it No No)
Even Lars Urlich Know it’s wrong (You could just ask him)
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should (You Really Should)
Oh Don’t Download This Song

Don’t Download This Song (Oh please don’t you do it or you)
Might Wind up in Jail like Tommy Chong (Remember Tommy)
Go and buy the CD (Right Now) like you know that you should (Go out and Buy it)
Oh Don’t Download This Song.

Don’t Download This Song (No no no no no no)
Or you’ll burn in hell before to long (And you deserve it)
Go and buy the CD (Just buy it) like you know that you should (You should get it)

Glacier National Park – Many Glacier Hotel

In case any of my friends were wondering if I dropped off the face of the planet this weekend, I was in Montana in the Glacier National Park area for a mini-vacation and a hippie music festival (Babbfest). The music wasn’t really my cup of tea, but I had something to do with marketing it, so it was a good excuse to get away for a weekend.

The festival itself was Saturday, and I didn’t leave there until around 4am. This made the trip back to my hotel a little eerie. Driving down a winding road at 4am, without being able to see a light in any direction. It was so dark that when I got to the hotel, I couldn’t see the ground (or a path) to get from the parking lot to the hotel (about 400 feet), so I kept flashing the parking lights with the alarm remote to give me flashes of light so I could see. The hotel I stayed at that night was Many Glacier, which is a bit of a creepy hotel in itself (Stephen King got the idea for the movie “The Shining” from this exact hotel… seriously).

Okay, so around 4:30 am, I finally get to my room. I take off my shoes and open the door to put the do not disturb sign on the door (which was like 60 seconds after I got in the room), and there’s a dude standing right at my door when I opened it. Needless to say, I almost shit my pants. Turns out he was just putting the early checkout slips under everyone’s door. But still… don’t sneak up on me like that buddy… especially when I’m staying in the hotel from The Shining, and it’s 4:30 am! 🙂

Oh dude… there’s no cell phone service within about 50 miles of this place, so I was pretty much cut off from the world (not only did the hotel not have Internet service either, but every plug in the entire hotel was the old 2 prong types, which means I couldn’t plug my computer in anywhere either).

There was a crazy fire over the weekend, and Alison got some pretty sweet pictures of it that night… which I’ll post as soon as she sends them to me.

Tanya Andersen vs. RIAA

I know this is old news for people that have been following the RIAA and MPAA lawsuits, but it’s new to me (now that I’ve been dragged into it, I’ve been reading all I can find). This entry is more of a bookmark entry for myself.

//p2pnet.net/story/8273

Some interesting stuff that I may find useful for my suit.

I’m sure they are going to want to go diving into my computers, which is fine with me as long as I have assurances they destroy everything afterwards. I’m certainly not going to let them take clones of every computer I own if I can help it. I have enough source code and trade secrets on my computers that I’m sure millions of people would love to get at it.

A judge ruled Andersen could name her own investigator who’d search only for specific files.

And the RIAA will have to pay his or her bill.

But the most interesting part to me is that she brought forth RICO (Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organization) allegations against the RIAA about 6 months ago. Since they haven’t been thrown out of of court yet, I’m assuming the counterclaim has enough merit that it will be forced to go to a full trial. I’m thinking I may be able to do the same thing, considering they “offered” a settlement of $2,500 based on no valid information (a random IP address they could have pulled out of thin air). Then when I refused, they flat out threatened me saying that if I didn’t pay, they would take me to court, and my costs incurred would be much more than $2,500 even if I beat their charges.

If they really believe they have a case against me, why are they “letting me off” for $2,500? They have much more to gain by going the court route. Oh wait… maybe because they are extorting money from people.

I’m not a lawyer (so someone please correct me if I’m wrong), but if I’m able to file a counterclaim that doesn’t get thrown out in court, would this prevent them from dropping their original suit against me (forcing it to go to trial and final judgement)?

The Wrong Guy Kewney

The BBC was doing a news piece on the Apple music vs. Apple Computer case and they were trying to do an interview with Guy Kewney, but instead they accidentally pulled his cab driver into the interview. 🙂

“I am very surprised to see…this verdict to come on me because I was not expecting that. When I came they told me something else and I am coming. So a big surprise anyway.”

Update

Okay, it turns out the dude wasn’t a cab driver, but instead someone named “Guy” who was at the BBC for a job interview for an IT position. Still funny though.

Neverland Ranch Shut Down

Today is a sad, sad day for the entire world… Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch was shut down today…

Michael Jackson has been ordered to shut his Neverland ranch by California authorities who have fined the pop star $US169,000 ($230,700) for failing to pay his employees or maintain proper insurance.

Jackson’s sprawling ranch in the central California foothills was closed yesterday, at least temporarily, by an agent of the State Labor Commissioner after the office discovered that his workers’ compensation policy had lapsed in January.

On a brighter note, Michael Jackson is looking pretty good these days, don’t you think?

Coldplay and The Magic Numbers

How in the F did Coldplay and Magic Numbers sneak into my iTunes/iPod? Somehow I have the full albums! They have been there for like 6 months, and been to lazy to delete those albums (they do suck). Coldplay are a bunch of whiney bitches.

I think someone broke into my house and put that crap on my iTunes.

Cat Piano

What gets me is the guy that invented this thing probably spent months “perfecting” it. What an excellent use of his time while his friends were out inventing useless things like a telephone or steam engine.

In order to raise the spirits of an Italian prince burdened by the cares of his position, a musician created for him a cat piano. The musician selected cats whose natural voices were at different pitches and arranged them in cages side by side, so that when a key on the piano was depressed, a mechanism drove a sharp spike into the appropriate cat’s tail. The result was a melody of meows that became more vigorous as the cats became more desperate. Who could not help but laugh at such music? Thus was the prince raised from his melancholy.

I Know These Guys

I don’t know why I thought this photo was funny enough to make a whole post about it… but I’ve known these guys (brothers) since they were wee little lads in high school. Don’t Nick and Drew look like a happy little crew?

If you are bored, check out their band.

France Legalizes Peer To Peer Networks

It seems French Parliament has legalized the use of peer to peer networks to share otherwise copy-written music and movies. Now they are just trying to figure out if they are going to impose a $5/month tax to users.

This is the best reason I’ve ever heard of to move to France. 🙂

The French courts have ruled that using peer-to-peer networks (P2P), providing you are doing so for personal rather than commercial reasons, is legal. The decision comes just as the French Parliament meets to discuss whether internet users should pay a voluntary tax or surcharge of €5 a month to use P2P networks.

The decision was actually made back in December but has only just been made public.

MP3 Ringtones

Why do people pay $2 or $3 for a cellphone ringtone of a song? I don’t get it because most cellphones these days lets you just use an MP3 as a ringtone. Get a freeware/shareware application that lets you cut a certain part of a ringtone (no point in having a 5 minute ringtone) as well as down-sample the bitrate to make it smaller, and viola! You can make your own ringtones with music you already own. Or if you don’t own it, you can buy it for $0.99 from the Apple music store (cheaper than a ringtone and you get the full MP3).

I’m a Mac user, so I use Amadeus II for the task.

The Hand That Feeds

Trent Reznor was supposed to play at the MTV Music Awards next month, but there has been a change of plans. MTV would not allow him to play his hit song “Hand That Feeds” with the backdrop being a picture of president Bush.

Interesting how political music is… Personally, I had no idea that the song was about Bush’s war policy (and specifically Iraq).

It’s a cool song, but I didn’t pay much attention to the actual lyrics, so I went and looked them up… I guess it is kind of political after all. {shrug} To be honest, I would have had no idea until MTV banned him from doing it, so I guess he got his message out even more now.

The Nine Inch Nails website just says, “Apparently the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me.” heh

Lyrics

You’re keeping in step
In the line
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
Because you do
What you’re told
But inside your heart it is black and it’s hollow and it’s cold

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

What if this whole crusade’s
A charade
And behind it all there’s a price to be paid
For the blood
On which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

So naive
I keep holding on to what I want to believe
I can see
But I keep holding on and on and on and on

Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees? [8X]

Stream XM Radio Online

Okay, so I’m addicted to XM Radio (satellite) since I bought my truck. I didn’t think I would use it at all, but it came with a 3 month trial (like a crack dealer… give you enough to get your hooked) so I tried it out. To make a long story short, my truck has a 6 disc CD changer that has never had a single CD in it (no exaggeration… it might not even work for all I know).

Anyway, I realized yesterday that if you have an XM Radio subscription, that also entitles you to listen to any XM Radio station online by streaming it live. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it requires Windows Media Player. Would be cool if they made it a normal Internet radio stream so you could listen to it with whatever you want (I prefer iTunes).

Numa Numa (Mai Ai Hee)

This isn’t new (someone sent it to me about a month ago), but it’s pretty damn funny. I was reminded of it today when I was coming home from playing frisbee golf, and the XM Radio was playing the song. All I could think about was this guy lip synching the song, so I had to find it again when I got home.

The name of the song is Mai Ai Hee (handy that XM can tell you that). If you want to buy it in the iTunes Music Store, click here.

I guess the guys name is Gary Brolsma… someone should start a fanclub for this guy, because he rocks! (Update: oh wait, it looks like someone did.)

I also found his site here.

Michael Jackson Begs To Sleep With Boys

This was kind of funny (in a weird way). The mother of a boy who alleges that Michael Jackson molested him, testified that she allowed her son to sleep with Michael Jackson after Michael Jackson begged and pleaded (also sobbed and cried for the record) with the boy’s mother to let him sleep with him. She initially said no, but she finally gave in and let Michael Jackson sleep with her son.

Seems to me that the boy might want to also name his mother in his lawsuit against Michael Jackson. Or maybe child protective services should step in.

I’m pretty sure that when I have kids, if a grown man cries and begs to sleep with my 13 year old kids, not only will I say no (and not give in), I would feel the need to give that man a beating as well. But hey, that’s just me.

iTunes Music Store

Dude, let me just say how happy I am that the iTunes Music Store is around now. Before the music store, I would order a CD online, but get tired of waiting for it to come, so I would use Napster to download the album so I didn’t have to wait. Anyway, long story short is by the time I get the CDs in the mail, I already have the music (if you download, you should always buy the music in my opinion). So I have tons of audio CDs that I bought that I never even bother opening (still shrink-wrapped) only because I buy all the music I download.

The iTunes Music Store saves me from having to buy CDs that I never open! Yay!

Now if they would just create an iTunes Movie Store, I wouldn’t have to have all these stupid DVDs (which I never actually use) laying around. Plus it would curb illegal downloading (people that don’t actually own the movie/CD) and protect the copyright owners with the DRM.

I have no issues with DRM on stuff I buy… I just want to be able to download electronically the media I buy, that’s all.

Team America, Fuck Yeah!

I went to the movies on Friday with Yelena and we saw Team America. This is quite possibly the funniest movie I have ever seen in my entire life.

If you just want to be entertained and aren’t caught up in being “politically correct” it’s one damn funny flick.

One of the best parts was the freedom fighters theme song that they listened to when fighting terrorists (it’s a heavy metal/rock tune)…

America! Fuck yeah!

Comin’ again to save the mother fuckin’ day, yeah!

Trust me, you just have to hear it… I wish I had the MP3. 🙂

Update: you can hear the beginning of the song if you have iTunes installed. Just click here (you can pay $0.99 if you want and download the whole thing to iTunes).

Xbox Media Center

Had a little longer to play with the Xbox Media Center from my previous post, and this thing just gets cooler and cooler the more I dive into it.

  • It has Mplayer built into it so it basically can play any audio/video format without problems including streaming content
  • Audio visualization (like WinAMP)
  • Organizes music, pictures, video, programs, etc.
  • Shows the weather from cities you predefine (pulls from weather.com)
  • Plays Internet radio
  • Supports numerous network shares for media (Windows/SMB, iTunes, etc.)
  • Plays movie trailers (picks them up from Apple’s movie trailer website)
  • Supports Python scripting language, so anything it DOESN’T do, you can make it do

Did I mention that this thing is bad ass? Oh yeah, I did.

60GB iPod With Photo Functionality and Video

Rumors are running rampant these days about a new 60GB iPod that Apple will be releasing in the next 30-60 days (it’s claimed to already be in production).

New things it has/can do:

  • 60GB hard drive (40GB was the previous largest)

  • Higher resolution color LCD screen

  • iPhoto synchronization for storing photos (I wonder if this means there is a Windows version of iPhoto coming soon like iTunes)?

  • Audio/video out (display your pictures on a TV for example)

  • $100 more than the previous high-end iPod

If this turns out to be true, I’m getting one, I have the original 1st generation 5GB iPod that could use an upgrade.
